YES!!!

THIS IS EXACTLY THE TYPE OF STUFF I WAS EXPECTING WHEN I START BROWSING THIS BOARD!

EXCELLENT QUALITY RECORDING AND EVEN COOLER VIDEO!

what's your secret to channelling voices of the past / that old school sound / look?

do y'all record to tape?

what type of vocal mic / pre's do you use? the vox definitely their own character to them!

don't feel obliged to give away all your secrets, just a few pointers in the right direction!

Sorry for the really late response! I haven't checked this board for awhile ...

It was all-analog, yes. As much old gear as possible, but some new stuff. There is no real secrets or tricks, just trying to get all the subtleties of a '60s record in there, as close as possible. Of course, we got 'close' in some ways but not there in my opinion. I think probably too lo-fi or 'home recorded' to sound like legit '60s. But that's okay, cuz I think it has it's vibe happening. Definitely current thrift-shoppers aping '60s music in a cheaper way kinda thing !!!

I'm no engineer, so the technical stuff is beyond me ... but I think I produced it in a way that flattered the music. Lots of layering of different parts. Heavy, slow compression on mix down.

The vocal mikes were all over the place, depending on the song. Mostly used the AT4033 and EV 631a for vocals through either an LA-610, a Shure M67 or Teac 5 mixer, which was the console used to mix the record as well.

If there is a 'secret' to the vocals it's that most of them are doubled and run through a tape deck for delay, along with spring reverb.

If I learned anything, it's that it has to be all-analog, start to finish ... I think that kind of workflow is a big part of getting anywhere near an old vibe. With regard to everything else, use as much old gear as possible (as long as it works and fits).

This is FANTASTIC stuff. Great songs and great arrangements and a recording process that serves the music perfectly.
