graphic vs. parametric eq
for recording, does anyone use graphic eqs on mix bus instead of parametrics?

I have several graphics, 15 and 31 band. They are older proportional Q gyrator designs that sound smooth on tracks. Newer graphics are mostly constant Q bandpass designs, those create niples on the band centers and are best used for cut only nulling of room nodes. I use them on tracks, I don't do global buss EQ nor buss compression here.
31 band graphics are powerful tools, not commonly seen nor used these days. Thom Sholtz used an Altec 31 band all over those old Boston records.

I like parametric for basically fixing stuff ( hums, noise, etc.)..Graphic gets used for tracking individual stuff...I leave the Master buss EQ'ing to the ME ( if necessary)..Usually he'll have more expensive, dedicated, higher quality EQ for the mix bus than I can afford..!.. ..I've found IME that I can usually get away with a "lesser" EQ, Compressor on solo instruments than grouped/more complex signals such as groups and mix bus..
