Shopping on Amazon $100 to spend

Post by ott0bot » Fri Jul 03, 2015 11:58 am

I was gifted $100 to use on Amazon and was looking for any suggestions on useful studio gear ideas. I'll only be spending the $100, no more, so anything over that is a no-go.

My thoughts:

A-Designs Atty: Super handy for preamp or monitor attenuation.

New headphones - My sennheiser hd280's are getting old, so I could get a new pair or refurb with new cushions. Also Shure SRH440 may be a worth a shot for variety. Also thinking of giving the Grado SR80e a shot for mixing, but I don't find them comfortable, and I'm not a fan of the build quality on the $100 models.

New DI - Radial Pro DI is the top contender...all others I liked were closer to the $200 mark.

Or screw studio gear, buy my kid a lightsaber & grab some new music.

Thoughts?

I'm pretty much in the same boat. Just got a $200 amazon gift card for my bday, but i don't really "need" anything at the moment. I've been thiking about a Lombardi 2060 dymamic mic, but i haven't yet checked the exchange rate to see how far my 200 would get me toward it. Even been thinking about using it towards a Kush Electra. I dunno... :evi

EDIT: I think i've got it, pretty sure i'm going to go for a DBX160a/500. I'm out of 19" rack space, but i have a few more slots of 500 rack. I could use some compression on my second snare mic. It seems like a great idea right now.

For $200 that dBX is hard to beat.

I'm still holding out for a bit...but headphones may be the way to go for me.

Went for the DBX, it should be fun.

One thing I was considering that might work for you is something like a Cloudlifter? I kind of want the variable impedance cloudlifter, but didn't feel like spending that much dough on one right now.

I don't think amazon has them, but i was considering the Cathedral Pipes Durham instead of a cloudlifter. I have a fethead which is cool, but it's become noisy and unreliable over time.

I have the Durham - feckin' lurv it!

I've been doing a lot of sorta M/S*, using various dynamics (lately a EV E609 or a AKG D1000E) for the mid and a MXL 860 for the side (not a bad ribbon, the best part being it's diminutive size).

The Durham lets me use any pre I want, so I can use older stuff like a 1589b (Altec) and get a strong signal that I can hear in the cans, even when I'm sitting next to the amp (I leave it set up onna Pro, Jr. next to my mix position).

And it really does seem to "clarify" the signal somehow ...

*I often take the ribbon track and delay it .01 or so seconds, double it and phase-reverse the double and bring those tracks back up under the dynamic-mic track, and not always panned LCR, either.
bandcamp;
blog.
I mix with olive juice.

Awesome. Let me know how it works. almost pulled the trigger on a cloudlifter. I could grab 2 of those for the price of 1 cloudlifter.
