RIP Louis Marino

Post by Gregg Juke » Mon Oct 23, 2017 9:02 am

This is almost a month late. I was shocked late last night to find out about the death of my teacher, friend, and mentor.

RIP Louis Marino, 1937-2017. Jazz drummer extraordinaire who played with the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra, Kai Winding, the Phil Sims Big Band, and Billie Holiday, and as a first-call sideman at venues like the original Tralfamadore Cafe and Melody Fair also performed with artists such as Lou Rawls, Chuck Berry, Lou Donaldson, James Moody, Sunny Stitt, Carmen McRae, Della Reese, Woody Shaw, and Charlie Byrd. As an educator he taught privately and at the University of Buffalo for decades, and produced professional players such as Moby's Joe Goretti and Charlie Daniels' Jack Gavin.

And the stories! Showing up for lessons was as much about the stories as it was about the exercises...

The music world, (no, just the world) is diminished by his loss...

He was Tony. You went to lessons for the stories. And I could listen all day!
