strange speaker problem

Post by joninc » Wed Jun 13, 2018 2:33 pm

I have a woofer that was slowly wearing out in one of my ProAc studio 100s.

I had a similar problem a few years ago and bought a pair of replacement woofers. I replaced one at the time and attempted to replace the other
yesterday.

Today I hooked it up and the speaker is not passing sound through the woofer - just the tweeter.

Took it back off and redid the soldering as I thought maybe the connection was bad.

Hooked back up - same problem.

Then I swapped the speakers to the opposite channels (L AND R) of the amp to see if it was the amp.

Now neither speaker is passing audio through the woofer!!!

WHAT THE ??

I swapped them back to their original sides and still having the same problem. NO woofers - only tweeters.

WHAT HAVE I DONE?

Amp is Bryston 4 b. Connected via KRK sub.

further testing... woofers are reading 6 ohms so I don't think they are blown - crossovers??

also apparently my amp is putting out DC voltages (44.9 ish) - i'm not techy but apparently that's bad.

I'd test with a spare amp.

You DO have a spare amp, yes? ;)

Also, it is always better to replace speakers in pairs. Either the tweeters of the mains. But always, in pairs.
Howling at the neighbors. Hoping they have more mic cables.

user error! 2 of the 4 speaker terminals have to be connected (bi-amped) and somehow became loosened and disconnected with all the moving them about...

D'OH!!

huge sigh of relief.

and slight bit of embarrassment.

As embarrassed as you may have felt, here's one that will make you feel better...

Yesterday I was reconfiguring my control room a bit (trying to figure out the hole in the bass in the listening position) and after moving my speaker stands, I decided to measure the distance between the 2 tweeters so that I could figure out where to put my chair to get the equilateral triangle. I did not put the supplied protective cover on the tweeters of my 1-month old Focal Solo 6's and as I measured, the magnet sucked the f*cking tape measure end straight into the tweeter, effectively shattering the outer cover.

So you sir, are doing just fine.
