Yes, I have to disagree here. Colauitta's awesomeness aside, there will _always_ be variances in each performance with a live player; that is the beauty of a real performer in the first place. You could go with some type of electronic simulation-- recorded playback of one performance, but then, you're not recording live, right? 'Bot drummer? Not a realistic situation at this time, and if it was, it would not be measuring what we are actually seeking to measure/test.
There's always going to be a compromise.
Tony, I loved your playing!

PS-- I didn't see your response until after I wrote the above, but, yeah...

ST:TNG episode 162, "Inheritance"
In which Data realizes he has not actually met his mother upon hearing her give a second violin recital.

LOL, not trying to demean you at all.drumsound wrote: ↑Fri Jun 15, 2018 12:12 pmI'm a hack
In all seriousness, even cats like Vinnie (one of the greatest EVER) there will always be subtle differences. I could have been more scientific and I can play the tune in my sleep and be pretty damn consistent, but I wanted to have a single performance. I also wanted to be a little time efficient, which would not have happened with 8 takes and measuring tape.
If you have ever recorded a sample library, you can see how nuts it can get.
Howling at the neighbors. Hoping they have more mic cables.

Took me a couple hours, but I got it.
It was worth it.

I still don't, but maybe it will come to me.
I'll simply add, for no apparent reason:
"Help me! Spock! HELP. ME. SPOCK!!"
"Good, now cry out like Lincoln."
"Help me, Kirk! Help. Me. Kiiirrrkk!"

PICARD: That is remarkable. Why don't you play something?
NELLA: You start and I'll jump in.
PICARD: What shall we play?
NELLA: What were you working on before I came in?
PICARD: Bach, the third Brandenburg.
NELLA: Perfect. Go ahead.
(Picard starts, but gets lost when she joins in)
PICARD: I'm sorry.
NELLA: It's all right. You're not used to playing with anyone, are you?
PICARD: Just the computer.
NELLA: I may not be as precise as a computer, but I think you'll enjoy it more. Why don't we start with something a little simpler. How about?
(she plays Frere Jacque and they do the roundel)
NELLA: Good. Very good. Now let's have a little fun with it.
(she plays it with minor variations, and Picard's eyes pop)
NELLA: You try it. Improvise around the melody. Anything you want.
(he does)
NELLA: That's wonderful. Keep going. It's so good.
(they play it though)
NELLA: You're definitely better than you think.

Even in the future, making live music with other players is still the most satisfying. Audience not required.floid wrote: ↑Fri Jun 15, 2018 8:01 pmPICARD: That is remarkable. Why don't you play something?
