Console in 1974 at Warner Bros, Hollywood? Ry Cooder sound

Post by nicholasdover » Tue Jan 01, 2019 5:07 am

Happy New Year folks!
Just wondered if anyone knew what console/setup was used to record Ry Cooder's "Paradise and Lunch"? 1974 Warner Bros studio in Hollywood.
It sounds so great to me but I can't really find much google info...

Some good info here -

They seem to imply that WB didn't have they're own studio until the mid/late 70s. Early stuff was done at Radio Recorders and Amigo. I could be reading that wrong though.

The way I read it, it may have been United Western (or Western Recorders, not sure when the name change happened).

Built by Bill Putnam, later became Ocean Way then Cello.

"Ry Cooder didn’t particularly like the digital aspect of (Bop.....) . He’s not a digital fan- its not warm enough sounding for him. It was super clean and super quiet, but the top end was different from what anybody had heard. Plus it was recorded at a brand new studio we had just built- the others were recorded at Amigo studios." (italics mine, from the analogplanet link)

At one point there was UA stuff? API? MCI? Seems likely, Demedio/API or Harrison: https://www.gearslutz.com/board/high-en ... ehaus.html

google for "images" amigo studios

This is listed http://www.1970smusicindustrymemories.c ... e-70s.html, "'70's":

Paris Texas has a similar sound and that's an API at Ocean Way according to Mark Ettel
