Sytek no longer making the MPX 4aii?

Post by permanent hearing damage » Thu Jan 17, 2019 8:09 am

Just stumbled on their website as I'm debating selling one of mine and saw it's discontinued. i guess there are probably an awful lot of them out there, but figured there would still be a market for these? just surprising is all. these still hold up pretty damn well, and I can't think of anything better for $200ish/channel

Pretty sure it was a couple years ago that they stopped being produced, yea. I have 2 for my mobile rig. They're great. Pretty insane value.

cosmic - was just remembering my unit which I sold to get a rack of API - and checking if they are still available - they were so good and I really miss em - very forward sounding, neutral but still euphonic - they ought to do a small mixer version with 8 channels nice routing and monitoring and an insert for the summing bus that lets you use other preamps for the gain a la the folcrom

You can sometimes find the 8 channel Elan. Otherwise it is at least 16 channels and above.
Howling at the neighbors. Hoping they have more mic cables.

Sytek and Neotek stopped doing business at the end of last year, I believe.

Its sad.

you know what would be great - a Neopets desk - with the little screen and a complete zoo of animals you have to take care instead of watching the wavs go by on the DAW during that portion of the session :^:

I used to have two MPX4aii, which was the only 'mid price' hardware step I ever took that I don't regret. Sold one when I got an API 3124, but I'll never sell the second. The other day I heard something I recorded on only those Sytek channels, and the pre is the farthest thing from the problem on those tracks (there are some others I won't get into).

They are pretty perfect for anything percussive, especially toms. Incredibly fast transient response coupled with being practically noiseless at any level.

Hopefully folks still getting a new setup can find these units secondhand. I wonder how many were made over the years.

I wonder if Mike retired, or if there's any ongoing service available.

He was going to put some pars packages together, but was planning to be donw by the end of last year. I'd assume if he still had parts, he's sell them, but he was trying to rent out the building, which means he needed to clear it out.

Wow, end of an era.

I ran a unit from 1997 until about 2012, then had some issues with it. He basically gave me a new one at a greatly discounted price, since mine was so old a lot of parts weren't available anymore. Still going strong.

Yeah. Its a bummer. They are about 2 hours north of me, and that was a big part of my decision to by my Neotek.

The most amazing thing about these units is how quiet they are at high gain. The fact that Stoica refuses to provide schematics for the MPX4Aii is a bit problematic. I once bought one used with a non-working channel. I found a good repair location that found the issue and repaired it for a decent price.
Now that he has ended production, prices for used ones are starting to inch up.

This is breaking my heart for some reason.

Haven't really used my Sytek in a long time, but it was my first real gear purchase, and I made a lot of really nice recordings with it.

Good luck to Mike.
I heard they inserted a Jimmy Hendrix into the chain somewhere before the preamp.

...Anybody know what that preamp was, 'cause I'd also love to get that sound.
