Recommend a tech [in Portland] to work on a Yamaha Rev 7?

Post by Snarl 12/8 » Fri Dec 07, 2018 1:11 pm

Hi Everyone,

I guess the subject line says it all. I've got a Rev 7 I bought new in 1986. I think it's gotten really noisy and might need a recap or something. Or maybe it was noisy as sin all along and I never knew any better? I think the first step would be comparing it to a "known good" rev 7, but I don't have one of those. I find it unusable the way it is. Anyway, where would you send it or take it? I'd rather go local because I have a postal impairment, but I think it actually wouldn't be that hard to ship this thing.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

PS I know I could probably find a new unit that was "better" for cheaper than fixing it. But I think I'd like to sink some money into fixing it for a few reasons. Preserving something rather than throwing it out. I really like the interface better than any other reverb unit I've actually tried. And I thought it sounded really good back in the day and I've returned to pretty much the tech I started on (Fostex 8-track), so I thought it might be cool to get the old "band" back together again.

Can't recommend a tech but can say that it might be the power supply. The Yamaha reverbs of that era all seem to have badly implemented power supplies.

Does anyone know if Jim Williams / Audio Upgrades is still a thing? They list a $200 procedure for the Rev 7 on their web site, but my email has gone unanswered. I kinda feel like the Jim Williams treatment would be ideal.

My debtors have the problem, but I'm assured the checks are in the mail.

Carl,

I'm based in Portland, OR and I work on music equipment. I focus mainly on multitrack cassette machines, but I collaborate with a friend on many projects and I bet your Yamaha Rev 7 would be right in his area of expertise. Drop me a DM and I'll get you my contact info!

The pencils mentioned above are all good choices. I would also highly recommend Prismacolor Premier.
