Beyer m88 on kick / pop filter

Post by randrohe » Sat Jan 19, 2019 8:50 am

I recently picked up the m88 wanting to try on kick, but then became leery after reading about possible damage to the capsule.
So, I ordered the Beyer ps88 pop shield and it only covers the top half of the capsule.
I realized the shape by looking at the picture, and while it is more dense than a regular pop filter, it doesn’t seem $30 more dense. Lol
I read here that it is likely the air being pulled into the back of the capsule that is the area of concern.
I’m not a heavy drummer, well, I’m not a drummer at all, but I get some serious hitters in once in awhile.
So, what should my anxiety meter read?
Orange, yellow, or red?

maybe use an SPL meter in the spot you want to put it - if it's over 100 don't use it there ?

Actually, just re read the spec sheet on their page, and it lists that pop filter for bass drum.
Case closed.

really?

I don't know man. I've used mine on kick a bunch, as well as floor tom and bass cab... stuff with lots of low end. Have never noticed anything weird that would necessitate a pop filter.

I suppose your mileage may vary, but I'd save that $30 for a nice bottle of bourbon or several Five Guys cheeseburgers.

I once got an amazing BD sound having an M88 lying on a pillow inside a 26" BD with both heads on. I have heard of putting one right outside a hole in the batter head being a problem...
