Worked on guitar and vocal overdubs for a project that started two years ago. Opening the files I realized that we last worked on it exactly one year ago. I have no great faith that it will ever be finished. More likely it’ll be worked on yearly forever. It won’t get better, just different. The clients are happy and enjoying themselves so that’s a win.
I love my job but every now and then a gig feels like the audio equivalent of digging a hole and filling it in again. Let’s do “what did you work on” again sometime. I promise my response will be something awesome.

I intend for this to be a open thread, where all y'all (and yo) can check in onna reg'larish basis, as both a record and a inspiration.

Last night, but I got the rare opportunity to track my band. I don't usually get to do this because I don't really have a live room, but a friend of mine just built an awesome jam room at his new house and was kind enough to let us try recording in it. It was a lot of work to pack up all the crap you need so hopefully the results will be worth it. I'll probably try to listen to the roughs today and see if we got anything. There were a couple that felt pretty good. It also made me realize I really need to figure out how to get a decent monitor mix when the whole band is playing.

I've got a new(ish) baby in the house so my creative time is very limited. I've got a new routine where for one hour every weekend I sneak out to the studio and spend the whole hour on a vocal track for one song-in-progress my power trio's already laid down parts for.

Today was slightly less satisfying cause I didn't have all the oomph I needed to get a long note on one part. I did the thing where I kept re-attacking it when it wasn't all there and I just wore my voice out waiting for it to warm up. Sometimes sleep depravation makes your voice weak.

Still worth it to slip in to a pair of headphones and stand in front of a nice mic and try and make something happen. A total escape. I used to dread recording vocals, now I kind of love it. And some days I even get a keeper in that hour.

This reminded me....my first solo record got started in 2001. Worked on it for a few months then it got shelved when I got busy with other stuff. It sat on the shelf for over a decade. At some point I was looking for something else and came across one of the files in the depths of my hard drive. It piqued my interest so I dug up the archives and transferred everything back to the computer.

Looking through all the files for one song, which had the working title of "New New York", I saw that I'd last worked on it the night of 9/10/01.

That kinda freaked me out a little.

Hung and tuned a Meyer Leopard line array system in a big theater in the city - it's for some shows by the English National Ballet next weekend.

Like, wet dreams?

More interesting than usual here, finished one remote tracking job with an electric band, got back to studio and changed out the gear, went and set up an other remote session for the next few days, acoustic duo work. Both several hours away from home, in different directions.
