sound effect libraries - good forums for second hand?
a new first for me - doing sound for a friend's animated short. going to need explosions and possibly some goofy cartoon noises. have found plenty of resources online for buying these, but hoping there might be a forum somewhere that has folks selling their unused stuff. any of you familiar with this world?

My limited, nonprofessional experience:
It's not that hard to make a fair amt. of what you want through recording & sound manipulation plus a couple of synths. (The Hanna-Barbera library features quite a few fairly simple analog synth sounds.)
It's worth looking in the sound effects/novelty section of your local CD store (if you still have one.) I looked at a few of the ones I have, and while many prohibit commercial use, not all do.
I will say I found explosions a particular chore. I usually ended up layering a lot of stuff to get close to what I wanted, & usually wound up unsatisfied.
Here's some of my cartoonish sound work: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HJeH1sseiQI

The old BBC sound effects libraries are all online now, free for non-professional use and quite reasonable for professional use:
http://bbcsfx.acropolis.org.uk/
The quality of the sounds is mixed, but some of it is very good.
Freesound.org is a good place to go as well.

I don't know how or why someone would or could sell a "used" sound effects library, but there is a ton of great free stuff out there!
I've found out about a lot of freebies (often limited-time deals) via the Tonebenders podcast: http://tonebenderspodcast.com/
This site is great too (for libraries and just general sound design education): https://www.asoundeffect.com/?gclid=Cjw ... gEQAvD_BwE
Another resource: http://designingsound.org/resources/sfx-independence/
But honestly, I find myself going to Freesound.org quite a bit! Takes a bit of searching through the crap to find the good stuff, but there are many dedicated people posting high-quality sounds there (even some Ambisonic recordings).
Happy hunting!

On the roll-your-own fx front: look up Ben Burtt on the youtubes. There's a fair number of interviews with/features about him, & his techniques are inspiring.

Freesound.org is great in a pinch.
Having worked in post-production (editing & sound), I have a ton of things I could throw your way as well if you give me a short wishlist. DM me.

that Sonnis download (27+GB) was not too bad (I think it took longer to copy it to a USB stick...) and seems to have some pretty cool content. I'm sure i will find at least one sound in there to use at some point. the couple samples I listened to seemed to be pretty good quality.
