Your favorite general use eq plugin

Post by losthighway » Sat Jul 13, 2019 1:48 pm

It's been a while since I've heard peoples thoughts on plugins, or maybe I was just thinking about other stuff.

Anyways, like the title says. Tell me about it. What one can you use on just about anything?

I use Neutron 2 as my general purpose. Not strictly EQ, but tons of utility out of this.

They're pretty old at this point but so am I -

Waves API eqs. All three depending what I need.

Waves Pultec.

Pro tools standard EQs - 1 band and 7 band. There are way more advanced options but i know these so well that it's quick and easy to dial stuff in. Plus I've made a ton of my own presets to get where I need to be super quick. I use these for high and low pass filters all the time.

In no order:

Avid EQ.
Any Neve 1081, real or imagined.
Massenburg MDW.
Nomad Factory EQP 4.
Howling at the neighbors. Hoping they have more mic cables.

The PT EQ, especially the one band for cutting/fintering lows. Sometimes for other things. The T-rack Pultec or PSP NobleQ for obvious color. I like the Wave API and Helios a lot. I fing TDR SlickEQ really great, because I like clicking through the different models to see what's best. I also really like the auto gain function on that. Sonimus StonEQ4k is really good, too.

I'm not sure I've ever used a non-stock EQ plugin.

I use the Waves Renaissance EQ for a lot of general stuff like hi-pass. next probably the Waves SSL EQ or E/G channel strips. Or I might use a Waves API, Waves Scheps 73, UAD Pultec or UAD Neve 31102 for something with more character. I have several other EQs that came with various plugin bundles and i almost never use them...

edit: totally forgot that I like the UAD Maag EQ too (again mostly when you want the "air", but good for other stuff too)

i really like the brianworx digital eq V3. easy to dial in and the band solo can help find problems quick. other handy things - M/S option, stereo spreading, mono maker for the low end, dynamic band isn't great, but can be helpful sometimes. also pretty light on CPU

for color, i honestly still like the waves API 550 or UAD pultec.

UAD 1073 on guitars is pretty great, though i'm usually more after getting some dirt with that one.

sometimes i'll get a touch of the Maag EQ for the air band.

i have the UAD massive passive and the Millenia EQ but I rarely use them.

I use the PT one band eq more than any other -- for high pass, and also to find the one sweet or annoying frequency to go after with something more detailed.

I like Sie-Q, and I like the IDEA of LTL Chop Shop but I don't quite have the hang of it. It should do great things. But I need to read the manual a few more times.

Fabfilter Pro-q 3, mainly for the awesome workflow and GUI.
Toneboosters EQ 4 if I need dynamics control as well, and if the Fabfilter GUI wasn't so dang excellent, this might be my only EQ. And so affordable!
Just as often, REAPER's ReaEQ for fast, simple uses, especially if I'm nervous about CPU in a big project.

Was I allowed to mention 3 ? ;)
