Oddball Compressor ... Executone M270

Post by pandemic » Fri Aug 09, 2019 7:55 am

...a little bourbon infused late night ebaying has led me to another "fix-it-up" oddball piece of gear.... a SS Executone M270 compressor. It will need a power supply and info on the web is scarce so I'm reaching out to see if any of you have any info... I haven't gotten it yet but here's some porn shots from the listing... Any help would be great.. Thank you!

Looks like germanium transistors, so probably pnp and you might want to be sure which way to hook up the p.s.

Looking at it, I can't see how it won't be the coolest thing you have in the rack,

Seriously, find some dudes who are into broadcast gear, that's what it may have originally been used.

The bigger caps look like transilytics (I think that's the name.) If they are, expect them to fail--if they haven't already. I had to replace a bunch in some old Wurlitzers once--they don't seem to age well.

Electrolytic.. but yes, they don't usually last more than 10-20 years - or at least are prone to fail after that long. They may "open" - then they are not doing their job - or they may short -- make sure you have a fuse on the power supply - or something in between where they are still not doing what they are supposed to do. I just powered on a friend's Carvin S1200 mixer (from 1978) and it needs caps. it passed signal but lots of noise, oscillation, distortion... but at least it did not release the magic smoke.

transilytic is actually what I meant--much more prone to failure (in my experience) than standard electrolytics.

Different package than the ones I worked on, but the guts look really similar. I agree that black tubular cap type is almost always bad. Everything I said in my groupDIY thread should still apply.

gotcha. Transi-Lytic was Sprague's trademarked name (but still an electrolytic cap - so could technically be replaced with a modern electrolytic and function correctly. the sound is another topic altogether...)

Had my local tech go over it and add a power supply.... meter moves and ...... maybe it compresses..... a little. Pretty underwhelmed but it does look cool. If it is compressing it is only doing so very slightly... not nearly what the meter seems to show. I'll get an A/B test up soon..
