yeah, but $1500!

I still go with a Radial JDI for most DI work. only $199.

of course I do put that into a 1073 clone pre.
Recently I've been using the DI on an LA-610 and wondering why I haven't used it more.

Seems like a lot of people really like the 610 as a bass DI.

I've recently been digging the DI on an API 312 pre better than the standard Avalon box that I also have on hand. Parallel with an overdrive pedal adds a little more hair.

The DI on the Hamptone JFET500 might be the best I've ever heard. The low frequency extension is pretty remarkable. I'd say the same for the HVTP-2 as well. That was my go-to until I got the JFET.

there are so many pre amps with great di's... SOLO 610 (wooly and rich), Great River/Chandler TG2 - punchy, Germanium - creamy! Louder than liftoff Chroma with N module - amazing drive and punch.. haven't used a DI box in years.

Would love to hear that ACME motown DI - curious if it's really unique sounding, or just hype.

Hi Mustang,

I recommend you check out the Amplitube 4 plug in, it is also stand alone.

They have a lot of bass guitar amplifier emulations, and I am sure you will enjoy them.

Howling at the neighbors. Hoping they have more mic cables.

I'd just try the demos and decide for myself, but I'm pretty sure I already used the demos, and like an idiot never got around to trying any of them.
What DAW are you currently using? If you are on a Mac and using Logic they have bass amp and cabinet emulations that you can insert on the DI channel.
I use those when I'm not getting where I need to get too. Lately I've being using the Waves Bass Rider - which is the same idea as the Vocal Rider only designed for Bass. I prefer that over compression - unless the song calls for compression on the bass.

I've wondered about bass rider. It really works well for you?

It reminds me of a problem I had with my first bass. It was a cheap POS, as these things tend to be, and when I'd record with it I'd always have big problems controlling volume. Part of it was no doubt my loft/lack of experience, but part of it was the instrument. The low, more open strings just put out way more energy than notes fretted higher up on the neck. And I don't mean a little bit louder, I mean way louder. Like 4 or 5 db, maybe even more. I thought I was crazy or just an impossibly bad bass player until I read an interview with Kevin Shields (can't remember where--might have been in TapeOp!) where he talks about using an old Steinberger bass on his recordings because it addressed this very problem. He said that particular bass just tended to be more consistent volume-wise. He also said it didn't have much low end. Anyway, all of that (he said) made it easier to get the bass to sit in the mix correctly.

the context of bass within a MBV song vs what many of the rest of us record is likely quite different! Those mixes are so dense with so much guitar midrange for the bass to fight against.

That said - there are certainly better and worse instruments out there and some will amplify problems in technique more than others - that's why many use compression on bass, to help even things out. Over the years I've turned more and more to the source sounds, having different instruments to use make such a fundamentally bigger difference than any plug in or pre amp.

I mixed 2 projects lately where the bass was DI and the tone was amazing - both were excellent players with vintage P basses but were recorded through radically different chains (1 was cheaper solid state SANSAMP type and the other high end V76 pre and Retro STa Level).

So while gear has an effect for sure, the player is such a large majority of the perceived tone IMO - the touch, the sensitivity.

Watching a compressor meter while tracking has helped me develop my touch on bass - lets me know when I'm digging in too much or not enough.
