I spent about a week trying different mics, different positions, different bass drums etc. Until I realized that my mixer was basically like summing 16 rat pedals.
Whoa, you should post that as an online review! Hilarious.

Now I'm dying to know the manufacturer of this board.

This is just my subjective opinion. It's a venerable name, but also not always known for absolute sonic excellence, IMO.
It feels wrong to name and shame on such a prominent platform.
DM me if you really are serious about wanting to know.

Go ahead and tell 'im, Snarl.

You don't talk to Peter Gabriel these days, anyway.

I've been reaching a similar conclusion about my Tascam m-512. I keep thinking I'll do something about it, but maybe it's just how I'm supposed to sound.

I had a younger co-worker asking about vintage Tascam mixers recently. I told him to look for a Ramsa. Tascam made some shitty prosumer gear back in the day, which really doesn't reflect well on their legacy of good tape machines.

That's odd, isn't it? For the money their tape machine do sound good. I mixed to an ATR 60 for years. I know a bunch of good recording were done on their various 1/2" 8-tracks. Yes the mixers always seems "meh" at best.
