Exactly. A very weird beast with two 9v NiCd batteries inside, charged by the phantom power.drumsound wrote: ↑Fri Jan 10, 2020 12:33 pmAre those the flat ones that came out in the 90s? I had someone bring one in to the old studio.Scodiddly wrote: ↑Fri Jan 10, 2020 6:14 amRemember when there would always be a suggestion for an old CAD E100? That's what I still use, though I'm a live guy and pretty much only do jazz these days. Flat down to 10Hz, add your own damn scoop.
Weirdly enough the original E100 mics are now selling for real money again on eBay. In my own mic collection they have acquired "slightly finicky vintage" status.

Re: unhyped kick drum mic
I wouldn't necessarily consider a D112 to be scooped. It's pretty mid-heavy to my ears.
I'll second drumsounds' recommendation for the M88. I've had good luck with that. RE20 isn't a bad choice either, but it's less instantly gratifying, IMO.
The bonus with buying either one, is you also have a great mic for bass cab.

that is a nice visual presentation of the mid scoop in the d112. it's there from the off, and based on proximity it can only get worse.

Re: unhyped kick drum mic
Yea, I mean, I used one for many years, almost exclusively. I'm just telling you what I hear. Compared to a B52 or e602 (the latter being my preference), it's got more of a midrange thing going on to me. Maybe not as much as non-bass drum oriented mics, but still...markjazzbassist wrote: ↑Tue Jan 14, 2020 11:54 amhttp://recordinghacks.com/microphones/A ... tics/D-112Recycled_Brains wrote: ↑Tue Jan 14, 2020 11:34 amI wouldn't necessarily consider a D112 to be scooped. Maybe all these unloved 112s can get switched over to tom duties. I always liked them there for rock & roll.

That's a cool idea, I've never tried it. I could probably get it to sit somewhere out of the way on floor tom, positioning might be a little tricker on rack tom with that big balloon of a mic, but I'm sure it could be done.A.David.MacKinnon wrote: ↑Tue Jan 14, 2020 4:22 pmMaybe all these unloved 112s can get switched over to tom duties. Another option would be the Heil PR48. It has a big bump at 75hz and 4khz but the mids are flat. So it has that low end heft but not a scooped sound.

I've had good luck with them on floor toms before, but it's not the 1st thing I reach for.

Re: unhyped kick drum mic
you guys and gals using the LDCs like the u47 variants and such. what positioning are you using? with the dynamics im typically peeking the mic right inside the port of the kick if it has one. is this the same starting position for the condensers or are you outside of the drum a little more?
sounds good, compress it

Re: unhyped kick drum mic
here's a shot of a recent session. I think this was an Audix D6 (but I've been using a Telefunken M82 lately) peeking into the port, sE X1 D outside the front head about 4" away and toward the top, point down slightly to avoid some cymbal bleed. DIY subkick about 3-4" from front head, but I don't actually use it most of the time... most importantly, I rotate the entire drum set about 12 deg.
just kidding.
