looking for mic stand extender to solve 414 shockmount issues...

Post by joninc » Sat Apr 25, 2020 2:42 pm

I have a pair of older 414 uls and the plastic threads are stripped in the shockmounts. otherwise they work fine. I don't wanna spend $50-$150 on another shockmount when I can just fix this by attaching an extender piece.

I bought an adapter from somewhere to fit in one a year or so ago - basically it's a metal extension that creates a tight enough fit for it to still be usable.

Now the other one has reached the same point of uselessness and I need another one of these metal extensions to crazy glue to it and I cannot for the life of me find one to buy online anywhere! I can't remember where I even got the first one.

it's 5/8 female to male - about an inch long and nickel.... any ideas? I've hunted ebay/amazon/google and online music stores with no luck yet. There's lots that are adapters of 5/8 to 3/8 but this isn't that - it's just is an extension piece. The problem may be a terminology issue where I'm looking for the wrong name "screw thread extender" metal thread adapter extender 5/8 female to male mic screw ....

anybody know what these are called? I'm losing my mind!

I know exactly the one you mean. I've got one here somewhere but have no idea where it came from or how I got it.
I can't point you in the right direction but if you can't find one let me know. If I can find mine I'll throw it in the mail.

Now was it me, I'd just go over the nearest hardware store and frankenstein something*.

I'm pretty sure hardware stores are open even now, and recording for me is certainly essential bidness!

*I recall high-school and making smoking implements, a couple of what I still have. Aerator screens are useful, too.

When my AKG shock mounts blew out, I got a pair of these:

I've had the same ones mounted over my drum kit for 6-7 years now? They are inexpensive - $20 ea. Only downside is I have to thread the XLR cable through the hole and snap it into the mic body before I push the mic body into the shock mount, otherwise the cable does not latch fully. Opposite when removing the cable. But I do that so little it's never really been an issue for me.

Could get one each of the 5/8"-27 to 3/8"-16 adapters and leave the 3/8" parts eternally connected. Would be a little longer than the adapter that you describe, but easier to find. On-Stage sells the one, and every Shure mic comes free with the other.

I think what you are looking for is the 5/8-27 thread female to male adapter (thread saver)

or maybe these would work?

https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail ... ic-adapter

or these - and then use some of the 3/8" to 5/8" converters

or these

or the Cadillac thread saver...
