I just got a Promark Sizzler-- you know the mardi gras beads looking attachment that lays on your ride cymbal to make soothing white noise.

Not the biggest gear purchase of my year, but kind of neat. I'm working on a delicate song for a covid collaboration and need a brushes type of drum track.
similar to a rivets on a ride type sound? had a drummer that found an old ride and put the rivets in it, was pretty cool for jazz.
Totally, a poor man's rivets. $13 sounds pretty good if you already have a ride you like. I wonder what a new rivet ride costs.

the sizzler is cool but a little different sounding than a real rivet ride - but close. If you are willing to sacrifice a crappy (or nice) ride cymbal, you can drill them carefully and add these -- https://zildjian.com/sizzle-rivets-12-pack.html the rivets can be removed, but once you drill the holes you can't go back...

I put the sizzler on crashes, rides, cymbal stacks, etc just for effect.

yeah my drummer found a decent but very cheap craigslist ride that he drilled and put the rivets in himself. he said it was easy and saved him hundreds of bucks. really nice for jazz swinging ride stuff, the cymbal wash was never ending

I use a cut dog chain collar for that.

That's an even better deal, even if you count the Bit o' Honey that Sweetwater will inevitably throw in my box.

The cool thing is that, the large ring slips right over the wing nut on the cymbal stand. I hang it off a snare lug on songs where I don't use it. I need to get a lighter one. I used to have 2, but the lighter one must have been left at a gig...

That is a great idea Tony!

And I use the Bit-o-Honey to distract my wife while I pull the other stuff out of the box... surely Sweetwater knows this.

no, I don't watch Fox but I am playing it safe. I don't who has touched it before it gets to my door or mailbox. certainly the person that delivered it. I'm not certain that they are wearing gloves and even if they are, they touch many packages. So until the CDC says 100% conclusively that it cannot be transferred (they have not been 100% conclusive yet - nobody really knows) then I'll be cautious.

and I figure software is safe - so I just downloaded a 30GB - yes 30 Gigabytes - of orchestral samples for $20.

SONiVox Film Score Companion

obviously have not had time to try it out yet, but for $20 I thought why not?
How are the SoniVox sounds? $20 well spent?

absolutely worth $20. But probably worth more. I have a few other sounds I've been using so when I get time I duplicate the track so I can compare them side by side. These sound good. The only thing I've been a little disappointed with so far is no saxophone... but again, $20.

Threw my 20 dollars at them, now I have to figure out how to get by with my stupid Macbook Pro 256GB SSD (I didn't see an option for changing the install directory/drive).

I'm on Windows but there was definitely an option for the Windows installers and I did install the samples to a different drive. it's huge.

i've been in 100% mix mode since the lockdown so I've been tempted to buy some new plugins...

I did pick up a few of the Kush audio ones on their 420 sale... The Omega transformer plugins are pretty cool little colouring boxes and the Novation Compressor is so far also impressive as a tone shaping and dynamic control tool. I love his plugins and have most of them...

Been tempted to check out the Sunset Sound Reverb plug by McDSP ... kinda worried it would be a CPU hog but it appears to do a lot - modelled their rooms, plates and springs.... pretty good price considering all that - i might demo it this week.

I picked up Sonimus Britson the other day when it was on sale for $28. I already have Satson too. Virtual consoles...
