Just got a few pancakes if Capture 914 tape in the mail. My project for the week is getting the old 1/2" 16 track back in action.

i've been in 100% mix mode since the lockdown so I've been tempted to buy some new plugins...

I did pick up a few of the Kush audio ones on their 420 sale... The Omega transformer plugins are pretty cool little colouring boxes and the Novation Compressor is so far also impressive as a tone shaping and dynamic control tool. I love his plugins and have most of them...
I'm doing the monthly subscription to see if any of these are worthwhile.

The Omega things are pretty cool, but I'm not convinced yet that they aren't redundant since I have Decapitator, Radiator, Massey Tapehead, etc...

I really like what the Pusher does, but jesus christ!, could the dude have come up with a dumber GUI for that? It's like an HR Giger painting. I get so frustrated trying to make fine adjustments. Also weird that there is no global wet/dry function, but after spending way too much time getting it just right, it sounds awesome. The AR-1 seems cool. I like it on overheads. Haven't tried the rest yet.

Mostly because A) the price was pretty decent and B) duplication.ca stocks it and has a physical store 5 mins from my house. It still came by post but delivery was really fast and cheap.

I've had my eye on a Tascam 238 for sale locally. It's the holy grail of cassette 8s (for me at least). Hard to get my head around the price tags though.

yeah i debated the 238 but it's direct drive and once it goes it's gone. the 488 is belt drive so you can always just get a new belt.

Interesting, it was few (10? 20?) years ago but I know the macheen was down until I obtained and replaced belts.

Perhaps they were fast forward and counter?

Edit: hmm, digital counter per the 'net, now I gotta go look ...

I still have the unit, somewhere in the garage with the prior Porta 2, and BR8 ...

Edit: apolajeez, I reckon I'm thinking of the Porta 2?

Anway, here is the 238 service manual:

Thanks. It took some patience. I only get a piece of gear like that once or twice a year if things are going good. I'm scared it's going to immediately make me wish I had a pair.

Nice! The first time I used mine it was definitely one of those “why did I wait so long to buy these” moments.

Just finished building a pair of CAPI VP28 preamps. Took me two days, but that’s building the op-amps too (which I probably wouldn’t do again, if I had the extra $$).
