Summing mixer with aux sends

Post by Flight Feathers » Wed May 06, 2020 9:41 am

I'm using a passive 16 channel summing mixer for my mixscoming out of Logic. A big part of wanting to do outboard summing is to use my analog spring reverb unit. I have setup a pair of sends in the DAW to send to the reverb, and that works fine, but what I'm missing is the ability to send to the reverb after outboard processing.

Current flow, for say a vocal track:
Daw -> Outboard EQ -> Compressor -> Summing Mixer

Ideal workflow:
Daw -> EQ -> Compressor -> (aux send to reverb) -> Summing mixer

On the high end I thing the Neve 8816 does this. Also the Heritage 20.4. These are a lot of money, and have a lot more features that I don't need. Ideally I'd stay passive on the summing and use my preamps for make up gain.

I did find this https://tascam.com/us/product/lm-8st/top which seems almost perfect, but no idea about the sound quality. Anyone ever use it? It also doesn't seem to have an efx return.

Does anyone know of a summing mixer that will do what I'm talking about?

I'm a bit confused with the passive thing. That Tascam isn't passive. The Neve doesn't look to be either.
Maybe you're looking for a line mixer (ie: a mixer with no pre-amps or with inputs switchable between pre and line)?

If that's the case , there are lots of high quality, small format mixer out there.

Get a small format mixing console. That is what they are for.
Howling at the neighbors. Hoping they have more mic cables.

I'm currently doing passive summing, using something similar to the Roll Folcrom https://www.rollmusic.com/folcrom.php. This lets me choose which amps to use for the make up gain on the sum buss, instead of being stuck with whatever amp was built into the line mixer. If it were a good one, I wouldn't care. Currently I am using a pair of CAPI VP28's for the sum make up gain, which are pretty great.

I've had several consoles in the past. I'm in a smaller space now, and looking to have everything in racks, and want easier recall. I don't need mic pres, eq's, faders, panning. Just 8 stereo channels with an aux/cue send per channel.

If it's rack mounted, this might do the trick.

I do not think you can find the old (from the 1990s) Yamaha keyboard line mixers, which would be simpler than this.

I looked for a few other options, but none had "sends" nor "auxes"... they are mostly made to MIX into a 2 buss output, with no other options.

Otherwise, you'd be looking at a pedal type thing like this:

All they offer, maybe one of these works for you?
