FS: Custom Eisen Audio API-style 500 series preamps

Post by Brad McGowan » Wed Jun 09, 2010 7:28 am

I'm making some space for some new equipment and would like to find a good home for two amazing sounding preamps. A few years ago I built two API-style 500 series preamps using the MkI version of the Eisen Audio DIY500 kit. Here's what went into each of these preamps:

JLM 99V discrete op amp
Cinemag CMMI-2C input transformer
Cinemag CMOQ-2S output transformer
Black Gate bipolar 1000uF coupling caps
Panasonic film bypass caps
Nichicon HE electrolytics for phantom power and PSU bypass
Clarostat potentiometer
C&K pushbutton switches
aluminum knob

There is a DI jack on the front panel, in addition to switches for 20dB pad, phantom power, and polarity reverse. Faceplate color is black.

The overall circuit is mostly based on an API 312/512. Imagine a more refined and open sounding API 512 and you'll have a really good idea of what this preamp sounds like. The CMMI-2C and Black Gate caps really help maintain an incredible amount of transient detail and frequency extension. While still benefitting from some transformer coloration, there is much less transient smear that you'd typically find with a transformer-coupled mic preamp. This preamp has basically lived on drum overheads since I've built it. It is big, open, detailed, and very 3D sounding. The JLM 99V op amp gives sources a subtle velvety texture compared to the Hardy 990C I had originally built the preamp with.

I'm asking $500 each or $950 for the pair. Buyer pays shipping and Paypal fees.

Reminder: you must own an API 500 series rack or lunchbox to use these preamps.

thanks,
Brad

I know this is a stretch but are these still around for sale?

If the posts are over like 1,000 years old, maybe they are no longer for sale. ;)

If you need a 4 space 500 series lunchbox, I might part with my Tonelux one. Let me know.
Howling at the neighbors. Hoping they have more mic cables.
