Handheld that sounds like like an LDC

Post by detroitdiesel » Sat Oct 03, 2020 7:32 pm

Love my beyer m25 (I think that’s the number)

It is a 58 with a bump around 5k if memory serves.

I’d like your thoughts on a hand held that sounds full.

I love my 4033s and my tlm103 but when bands come in and want to sing with the band and want to hold it, my beyer doesn’t always sound as good. A mic in a basket doesn’t always get the singer in the mood.

Hand held sennheiser or some such under $600 or so that you absolutely LOVE??

And...go!

I've always assumed this was the gold standard of what you're talking about.

...but I've never tried one. I've seen videos of performances where people used them and they sounded great to me.

Edit: Link is to Neumann KMS 105 Supercardioid Condenser Handheld Vocal Microphone - Matte Black <-- I thought it would show in the URL I posted above, but it don't.

I had a rock singer bring a shure beta 87, and we ended up using that. I wouldn’t say it sounds like a u87 but I was pretty impressed by it in the context of this band.

The Beta 58 is good enuff for Bono.

As well, I like the various Sennheiser MD's that are made of black plastic, such as the MD512, MD518. I found the MD511 kinda dirty-sounding, at least the one I have ...

The MD421II is pretty good, as is the EV RE320 (transformerless), but somehow don't have as hefty a sound as the SM7b. You can find the former two under $200, used, but you would likely need two hands after the first verse (the SM7b is also large and awkward, but considerably more expensive due to its video ubiquity, if for no other reason - but it does sound much better, IMO.)

AT makes a handheld with the 4050 capsule that sounds really good. I guy I play with has one, but I can't remember the number.

there is another model that claims the same diaphragm as the 4033 (which I like as a mic), but both of these have a completely different mounting and placement of the diaphragm so its probably only worth mentioning for marketing purposes... but if it sounds good, then that's what really matters.

I love my Se Electronics V7 BFG's. (See the Tape op Review) . I track everything live at once, and the room/band bleed is actually usable, and complementary. I think they have an aluminum diaphragm, and the presence peaks are in different frequency ranges than the usual suspects. The Heil Pr35 is pretty awesome-same size large diaphragm as the pr30,but in a handheld, and like most Heil's-minimal proximity effect. +1 on the Neumann,+1 on the Beta 87 (with a little de-essing). If I had the $$$$,I'd pick up the Neumann, just to say i owned one. Hate to have someone do a "mic drop" for effect, and watch a substantial investment disappear.

Doesn't Telefunken do something with this concept?

The T funk I was thinking of is around $250. It's the M80. Not sure if it's as amazing as advertised. It was in this here magazine, but they were focused on its snare recording performance.

Thanks for doing my homework, Mike. That's the one. We've never done a comparison with a 4050, but its still a good sounding mic. $380 seems like an OK price as well.

yeah I use it for snare too - better than a 57 IMO. But it is still a dynamic mic. I've not tried it for vocals yet but after the pandemic is over, maybe... also, got mine lightly used so it was not $250...

A singer brought the M80 to a gig - pretty good mic. I made a memo to buy one. The original poster left the question a bit wide open what he would like, if he wants the treble of a LCD, if the wants the "fullness" while eating it, if he wants the faster transient response comparing it to a moving coil mic.... of if he wants the additional bleed many LDCs would bring to the situation....
Due to luck and circumstances i am offering a limited run of Beyerdynamic M380 clones with unused Beyer capsules. PM me for info.

I’ve used this twice live and it made my life much easier! Sounded fantastic in the entire midrange into midbass, top was beautiful, loved this mic!
Its good enough to record with easily. Sounded like an ldc but less feedback than an SM58. Amazed!
Harumph!
