As moderator I feel inclined to remind you that there is no such thing as too many mics.

Exactly. That's like telling a woodworker they own too many clamps.

I have 8 Shure SM 58’s, fight me. They often sound great on vox.
In the “it depends” category:
If you only have low end pres’s with bad power and. Tl072, a 57 or 58 is perfect, no need to spend too much, BUT,
If you have some decent pre’s with Melcor 1731’s, API 2520’s, JE990’s, and cinemags or carnhills, you may want a mic for specific sounds which you will only hear through better gear.
A Peluso is amazing but not on a peavy board, a 58 is great anywhere, so, I vote 58.
Fight me! I’m back!
Harumph!

OK.

Beta 58 can be much better, particularly on vocals.

Also, SM545's rule on amps.

Lately, I'm using a MD21u on amps, and a MD421n on vox, and thru decent (Eureka, Summit, ISA1, UA110, UA710, PM1000, VC1Q) pres.

Microtech Gefell UM70 (multi-pattern M7) or M71 (cardioid-only M7) on either the 691 or 692 preamp body. I own both capsules and both preamp bodies. They are incredible mics for a wide range of instruments, but I feel like they really are wonderful as vocal mics.

I also love an SM7b and recently picked up a Cloudlifter for it. Psyched to check it out for vocals.
I record, mix, and master in my Philly-based home studio, the Spacement. https://linktr.ee/ipressrecord

Definitely. I’ve got a M71 with a 692 body, and I love how the low end stays in check even if you’re a few inches from the mic. And the m70 sdc cap is pretty sweet on acoustic guitar, too.

The Clouderlifter and similar stuff - I have the Cathedral Pipes version - are just awesome; they can make yer mic like a different, more sensitive one with added clarity, and can work just as well on dynamics as ribbons.

I like 'em so much I have two, and a ribbon 40' away into an ISA1 has the gain on the low setting at about 9-10:00 on a moderately loud* amp.

I'm hungry for a pair of M70 caps for my Gefell bodies. I have a KM84 but at this point getting a second one isn't going to happen (at the current prices). I've read that the M70 capsules are *very* close to the KM84 vibe. Grabbing a pair seems like the right move.

Yeah, not sure how they compare to an 84, but mine isn’t as bright as a km184, but still has a really nice top end. My 682 is a bit noisy, but I can live with the noise because I like the tone quite a bit.

Should probably stop talking up the m70’s...

Last November I was at a very well heeled studio in Tempe, AZ with a deep mic closet.
I noticed a Warm Audio box in there w their version of the 251. Asked to put it up to check it out.
Used it on some harmonies, some percussion OD's and some acoustic guitar.
I really enjoyed singing on it. I got one as soon as I got home and a couple of my friends have gotten the since.
