What to feed my Tascam DA 88?

Post by Dubmaniac » Wed Dec 23, 2020 8:59 pm

When I moved this fall, I found my old Tascam DA 88. For those who don't know, it's a digital 8 track tape recorder that was Tascam's answer to the ADAT. It used Hi-8 videotapes. I would like to try recording with it (and my recently revived Mackie 1604-VLZ mixer) as a DAWless system- specifically, one with some built-in restrictions (8 tracks, tape, no waveforms, etc.). Limitations can be a good way to force yourself to find new ways to work, and I want to see what I can do within these limitations. There's only one problem- I don't have any tapes for it! Now that's a limitation that I can't work around. Does anybody still use the DA 88, and if so, where do you find tape for it? Are certain tapes better or worse for it? Do some jam more than others? As always, thanks in advance.

You can find used (or never used, but pre-owned) tapes on eBay pretty easily.

I’d recommend Quantegy DA8 (linked here)

But you may also want to grab a head-cleaning cassette (as the age of the unit is certainly gonna increase the likelihood of jamming and read/write failures)
Here’s one

And water it only with head-cleaning fluid, a dab at a time, administered by a non-shedding applicator.

And they should use a non-shedding Q-tip.
