How to get a newly-recorded vocal to sit with samples from shellac 78s?

What are people's thoughts on iZotope's Vinyl plugin? It's free…

I did use it on a record once several years ago. it was a friends 80 year old father playing a Plectrum Banjo and his 2 sons - probably in their 50's - playing acoustic guitar. A bunch of old "riverboat" songs. I started the first song with the scratchy vinyl sound (so it sounded like an old 78) and then faded into "normal" fidelity. but I haven't used it since. don't think it's even installed.

Basically, if I could get a vocal to sound more or less in this ballpark, then I'd be happy.

So, first off, sing like that. Rise into those vowels, then hang on them. Don't sing too loud. Add some vintagey vibrato. Nobody sings like that anymore.

Second, try lopping off the highs and lows. Nothing below 120 Hz, nothing above 7 kHz. Maybe with a dynamic mic or a ribbon.

It's noisy, but not too distorted...but you could try adding just a hair - I'd do it before the highpass/lowpass, so it doesn't add brightness.

If the source material has surface noise, I don't know that adding any more would help. If you do add some, again cut the highs and lows on it.

Probably would help if your singer smoked a pack of Luckies or Camel unfiltered before and during recording.

Great tune. What I'm hearing is no lows or much in the way of highs. Tiny bit of distortion. Obviously the vocal style is going to be a factor. No reverb at all, very dry.

Maybe reamp through a small guitar amp with an omni mic to avoid adding bass through proximity effect? If I was doing it all in the box I'd add a bit of distortion *before* the EQ.

Something else you could try is just to record the vocal to your phone. It'll be a bit band limited and probably limited, though not as lo-fi as you'd think.
