Latest gear you've acquired.....
Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....
Because of this thread, I listened to Ode to Joy in cans last night.
It really feels like a bit more produced Tweedy solo record - very pretty, and now that I know why the guitar sounds that way ... I do recall remarking to myself over the years it is a really dead-sounding guitar, but not inna bad way. But a rubber bridge never occurred to me (there a card game metaphor in there?).

Listening now. That's the sound. Mine is likely even deader due to being strung with flats.
Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....
I may try to do it onna non-trapeze guitar ...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....
picked up a couple (used) Soultone cymbals. These are the "Vintage 1964" models and I kinda like them. dark and washy - and bendable thin. I got a 18" crash and a 22.5" crash/ride. Now I'll be looking for another crash in the 19-20" range I think (this can be my big washy set of cymbals). right now I have it paired with a 16" Paiste prototype crash that doesn't sound like your typical Paiste - except maybe the "traditional" series. I had tried a few other Soultones - an "extreme" ride and a "latin" crash but they didn't do much for me and I released them into the wild.

I've been on this quest too... doing an album with a friend and treating all acoustic instruments with muting and foam / felt etc. There's a dude in LA who makes these and Phoebe Bridgers and Ethan Gruska are using them a lot too... probably blake mills too as they are all in the same sort of circle

So my buddy/Luthier Chris Lemky made me one out of rubber erasers for a Kay electric.

Been using it a lot and it's a really interesting texture to have the pluck of of the guitar without all the sustain - it creates a lot more space in the sound which is great if you're trying to keep the soundstage more muted and dark and it lets the vocals naturally sit more clearly on the top of it all. I heard Tweedy explaining that he likes dead instruments for the same reason, they don't compete with the vocal. listen to Garden Song by Phoebe to hear this in action. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p1LqnTuQNHc

for some upcoming classical recordings, I grabbed a True Precision8. Super excited (it sounds awesome), but sadly... there's a weird thing happening with the LEDs
See other thread, if you've owned one and have ever seen weirdness with LEDs

MXR Brown Acid - a dirt pedal, keeps the low end really well (tone control appears to only affect the highs), kinda Muffish tho' s'posed to be based on the Tone Benders.
I actually wanted a Tone bender sound to replace my Super Fuzz on my guitar board and didn't want a treble booster (also have a Meat,Jr. and a rat-tish Iron Horse on there, and a Box of Rocks, and a Muff) ...
I may use this on my bass board, tho' and just add the Spark to the guitar board.

Forgive me if this is a stupid question, but how do you intonate one of these things?

Mine has a floating "bridge" which is just a strip of rubber glued to a popsicle stick. I slid it around until it was in the ballpark, then marked it's position and fine tuned it with a razor blade. It's about as accurate as the original wooden bridge. Maybe a bit better.MoreSpaceEcho wrote: ↑Thu May 20, 2021 9:14 pmForgive me if this is a stupid question, but how do you intonate one of these things?
It's not perfect but neither is the guitar. What do you want for $50?
Some folks are using shrink tubing over an existing wooden bridge. I'd imagine there that if the intonation is good pre-rubber you'd just have to move it around a bit to compensate for the new layers.
Jake Wildwood is carving new bridges out of truck tire and compensating for each string. He even did an electric 12 string baritone - https://jakewildwood.blogspot.com/2020/ ... tring.html

Thanks! That 12 string baritone is super sweet.

Just got this in the mail yesterday. I'm going down the rabbit hole of 60's jobber parlor guitars. I've put extra light flats on it and am enjoying it quite a bit. It's pretty nice to have one of these where everything that can be fixed is taken care of and it actually plays well.
I've got a Japanese gold foil on the way which will go into soundhole/neck position. Once that happens I'm going to move the jack to the side, use the old hole for a volume knob and add a switch on the lower side below the neck.
I've been playing it though a 50's Magnatone Varsity and have to say that it sounds pretty great as is. I expected it to be overly bright and thin given the pick-up position but it's not at all.

"inlays" = white paint on a black painted fretboard.
