Recently got Memphis Underground by Herbie Mann. I figured it was gonna be pop-jazz Herbie treatments to some soul tunes. It started off that way until some gnarly fuzz guitar came in. I was like what is this? Sonny Sharrock, THE Sonny Sharrock. Wow. Very interesting. I read up and apparently Herbie was all about Sonny, had him in his band for years and had Sonny open for Herbie as well, even though the audiences usually didn't dig the fuzzed out free jazz of Sonny's Solo material. Pretty interesting stuff, i honestly never would have put these 2 artists together but it works. Nice dichotomy the clean playing of Herbie (and the rest of his band) with the wild fuzzed out Sonny.
3 minute mark is where sonny's solo begins
