I missed when BMI went to a "for profit" model last year. I'm sure it was done as quietly as possible. To put it bluntly, this all sucks big time for musicians because you know who is going to be getting the "profits" from any of this (...the corporate greed mongers). I am (currently) a BMI member myself, and I have even benefitted from a small amount of mailbox money (by sending in setlists to claim royalties). I am very disappointed in these recent announcements by BMI however and will be looking at alternatives.

Re: BMI selling to private equity firm
here's a nice list i just compiled
PERFORMANCE RIGHTS
SESAC - for profit
BMI - soon to be for profit
GMR (global music rights) - for profit
ASCAP - NON PROFIT
MECHANICAL RIGHTS
HFA (harry fox agency) - for profit, subsidiary of SESAC
MRI (music reports - for profit
MLC (mechanical licensing company) - NON PROFIT
Looks like ASCAP and MLC are the only non-greed choices.
