Watch out if you get the 'british mod' for your depressor. If you do, anything you run through it will sound like Morrissey.dennis wrote:Aint that the truth... now alls I got is depressor

Dave's answer is the right one. A Distressor is a brand of compressor. The rest of us are just being silly.Derrick wrote:So far, really informative answers.

In fact, here's a link to the Distressor's manufacturer. You can get info on the unit here: http://www.empiricallabs.com/.

Re: Difference Between Distressor and Compressor??
Its a compressor that has similar traits of several classic compressors, and some its own, and this makes it a pretty versitile unit and I believe one of the main reasons people dig it..I read Roger Moutenot owns like ten of them, I think in tapeop..

Re: Difference Between Distressor and Compressor??
Is the only difference that it's expensive or is it a brand or a type/style of compressor?

Re: Difference Between Distressor and Compressor??
It's a brand. And it's expensive. But it sounds great, IMO.
There's not really a "type" of compressor. They all do the same basic job. Some use different type of detector circuit to determine when the signal is above the threshold (like the LA-2A, which uses an electro-optical circut to do this job). The Distressor is just a really nice sounding compressor that can apply a lot of gain reduction without sounding like crap (depending on, of course, the source material).

derrick-
"distressor" is the name of the product. The product is a compressor. Sorta like "Corvette" is the name of the product. The product is a car.
