New Deftones Album? Comments?
Well, IMHO the Deftones & Terry Date seem to have put out another album with pretty damn good sound quality.
While I found, generally, the actual production of the material on the underdeveloped side, it's still got some moments. I was kind of hoping for a mix between "Fur" and "Adrenaline," but I got something like "White Pony II," which is ok. (The only CD I've purchased in the last 2 months, BTW.)
Anybody else think that the kick is just a wee-bit bass heavy???
Too much filler material in exchange for fancy enhancements?

I think the new CD is a great example of modern mastering. The topic has been pretty hot lately. The CD doesn't get bigger when you turn it up. Is this just a problem when recording really loud records and mastering them to a low volume?
I know it's different kind of music but when I listen to Soul coughing I hear SPACE. Tons of space. You can hear each instrument, noises and effects. But the deftones sounds squished. Squished sounds small to me. 311 suffers from the same thing. I have never seen the deftones live, but 311 is LOUD as hell and HEAVY too. You would never know it from their CD's though.

Yeah, I find that turning it up results in too much midrange and slight lack of dynamics, but not as bad as, say, the last QOTSA CD.
Track one is really quite a good track, IMHO Deftones always have the coolest track one. But there's a few other tracks that are growing on me. I'm just glad they haven't let me down yet; very few bands can put out 4 albums in 8 years and still keep me entertained.

I haven't bought it yet, and I don't think that I will. A friend in my band had it and we listened to it before practice. After we were done with it I threw in the new pleasure fever ala Larry Crane. They both don't know anything about recording and or tapeop but they loved the CD. Every song sounded familiar. Pleasure Fever has that deftones vocal thing kind of going on a couple songs. Needless to say it sounds better to our ears.

Anybody notice that the guitar is out of tune at the end of Minerva? That is seriously lame. And it wasn't some sort of artistic statement either. They just fucked up and didn't catch it. Deftones put out one completely solid album, two good albums, and their newest: complete shit. They're too pretentious and artsy and on their way down. look for this to be their last album.

Me? I like pretentious and artsy. Guess I'll check it out first chance I get. . .

I dunno, there's a few gems on here, and, unlike ALL of the other ones, there's not a track that I'll always skip...

Well, I picked it up and I like it a lot. Only time will tell if it grows on my like White Pony did, but it seems like quite a good CD. Agree about no automatic "skip" tracks.

White Pony, for me at least, has the most "auto skip" tracks of any Deftones album. But the good songs are some of the very best they've ever done, so I think it's ok.
So far, Fur is my ultimate fave, especially that supa fat kick.
