Ashlee Simpson on SNL

Post by Mudcloth » Sat Oct 23, 2004 10:00 pm

I came home from a gig tonight and turned on the tv to snl and saw Ashlee Simpson walk off stage when the her pre-recorded vocal came on early! The band kept playing by themselves for a few more seconds before they cut to commercial. Awesome! Awesome! Awsome! Please tell me someone else out there saw that.

Here's my e-mail to nbc:
You are sooooooo busted. Nice pre-recorded vocal track for Ashlee Simpson. There are so many talented people out there that actually know how to sing and you throw that no-talent up there with a lame attempt to lip-sync. You just clearly illustrated what's wrong with the music industry and the entertainment industry today. How can you allow that crap on your show? Where's your credibility? Prove to me that other "artists" haven't done the same thing and gotten away with it. Why should I watch any of your programming after seeing that? Whoever booked that piece of crap and allowed that girl to Milli Vanilli her way on stage should be fired. Her reaction to this debacle was priceless. How do I get a tape of that? Actually, that was the best tv I've seen in weeks. Better than the first presidential debate. Morons.

Oh yes.

I missed the very very start of the song, I was switching back and forth between SNL and soft porn on tittymax. Anyway.

Someone's gotta find video of this so we can tear it apart. Was that the entire vocal canned, or just the backing track?

At the end, she said "my band started playing the wrong song," and I though it sounded like the song she "sang" earlier when it began--but that's what I always think. Let's get to to the bottom of this, Tape Operators.

I was just saying when SNL came on thisevening, that they've gone WAY too TRL with with their choice of musical guests. Look at what they've had so far:

Usher

Ashley Simpson, and her ADAT tape

and next week--Eminem.

What the fuck has happened to this show, guys? We need to write some letters.
When is the Douchebag Rapture?

I saw the whole thing go down. My girlfriend and I were pretty sure that she was lip syncing on the first song (though we were 100% sure the vocals were auto-tuned)...but on the second song, the drummer started, the band came in and then her vocals came in -- without her. They tried to pull them down but it was too late, the damage was done.

I'm sure that whoever's job it was to hit play (A Professional AE, I'm sure) f**ked up and played the first song again. The drummer caught on (cause he had in-ear monitors and had to sync to the track....), knew what was about to happen and started the first song again, the rest of the band caught on and played the first song but Ashlee never figured it out. The band was just trying to save her ass...

...Imagine playing up there knowing what was about to happen...

I don't know whether to celebrate or cry.

ps: who do you think will get fired first? Who'll take the fall? Bet it's not Ashlee...

I hope whoever pushed the play button did it on purpose. A hero, in my book.

Thanks for the link. That's some funny shit. I like how the bassist and guitarist look at each other and smile. They know she deserved it.

if anyone was dumb enough to actually listen to and like her before this incident, they'll probably just sympathize with her and run out to buy an extra copy of her debut album so as to "show their support".

That was insane! That actually happened on live TV last night? The whole thing? It was an eternity before she walked off and they went to commercial. And when the vocal track started the engineer only pulled it down! Not off!

I think my favorite part was the band- "um, yeah, let's just play harder! we haven't just been totally shanked on TV!"

I've actually done tours as a guitarist with artists who used that many tracks (yes, even vocals)- it sucks (but it paid really well). That was totally a case of the track guy starting the wrong track (and like someone else said, the drummer heard it in his ears and went with it- a lot of artists tracks even announce the song in the drummer's ears just to be safe). Man, if you are going to do that, you GOTTA give someone in the band control of the tracks.

what about that super awesome "I'm Jack Black in School of Rock" dance she does? HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA !!!

When did SNL change their policy? I thought they never allowed this kind of thing.

man... my wife and i just tuned in to laugh at her complete inability to sing in tune... i didn't know we were going to be treated to the single most awesome pop performance ever. while trying to find the video i came across some hilarious posts on ashleesimpsonmusic.com... including one where someone claimed "any singer who DOESN'T use backing tracks live is an idiot." call me an idiot. the post though, were the fifteen threads about what a turd they all think she is now, and how apparently there's an ashlee simpson sex tape floating around.

EDIT:

i just found this quote (on her website, no less) about her SNL perfomance:

I'm going out to let my real talent show, not to just stand there and dance around. Personally, I'd never lip-synch. It's just not me.
