tascam 388-noisy inertia roller...any tips?

Post by hans » Fri Apr 24, 2009 9:53 pm

first post and i could sure use some assitance!

the inertia roller on my tascam has an insane squeel during playback and record functions which is transferred to the heads thus destroying takes and the whole shebang. is it just needing a little lube?

suggestions on oil type? and where to apply?

thanks in advance for any help! i seemingly have a healthy specimen on my hands otherwise (knock on wood)

Mine wasn't squeaky, but I took it apart because it wasn't turning consistently and so the lcd readout wasn't accurate.
In any case, you want to use some light machine oil, like that used for sewing machines and such. Just a drop or two on the shaft,
smear it around for coverage and your done. Hope that helps.

PS-This 388 thread http://messageboard.tapeop.com/viewtopi ... 8&&start=0
is one I have periodically updated as I happen upon 388 info. Old magazine ads, a primer on dbx noise reduction, a photo series on installing a new capstan belt, as well as studio configuration setup pictures.

I concur, the tachometer roller needs to stay lubricated as all rollers do on that machine and don't lose those nylon washers! It appears they are using a
photo reflective surface as they have in some cassette decks on this roller.
