Hidden Treasure Mics- Post Yours!!!
Thats right, it's time to come-clean and let everyone know about that "secret weapon mic" on a certain application that you've been taking credit for over all these years! A reletively-unknown mic? A well-known mic used in an untraditional application? What ever the case, it's just gotta sound amazing. As always, cost vs quality is a factor. Please list the mic, any special placement techniques and what application you've found it to excell so-well in.
Now, let us bring these beauties out of the woodwork and into the spotlight,,,,

hmmmm....maybe the EV 660 dynamic mic. It's the best mic ever for noise rock-feedback-crapping out guitar amps. It's smooths things without losing the out of control edginess. Many of the old EV dynamics are great on guitar amps. The EV 664 is the same thing I think with a built-in mount. Also, the Sennheiser 411 or 412. It's like a mini 421 with less low end. It's really great for an upfront vocal sound. Rock rap style stuff it's good for too. It can be a great guitar amp mic on the right source. Better for clean tone from what I remember.

I must say that when I run this mic through the mackie or 001 pre's it's pretty horrid....Nice pre=nice sounding mic....At least in this case.....

Bova Ball.
Over the drummer's right shoulder, away from the hats, near the floor tom.
COmpressed a bit.
The bova ball is a microphone every person should have. You would be amazed at what that mic can do. spherical omni condenser. class A. Insane transient whallop, amazingly open and gorgeous.

Fostex printed ribbons for guitars and Gefell M582 tube mics with modular capsules for overs, vocals, room mics, instrument mics ect. Those damn Gefells get used for almost everything.
I know enough to know that I don't know what I am doing.

Omni dynamics.
Shure 535 on snare (right up close on the shell). EV 635a's or Shure VP64's on guitar amps.
Also. I have a wierd old plastic RFT mic that is my go to for inside kick drums.
Also, there is an Ibanez mic (can't rmember the model #) that is the best tom mic i've ever heard. They look like a shorter RE20 in black.

Wow...
Great to see omni dynamics getting some love....
An EV654 gets a lot of use around here for distant guitar cabinet miking....
As does an EV 655c...
My "secret weapon" mics are my Altec Coke Bottles. Drum OHs, room mics, etc....
Also the EV RE38 for kick and certain vox...
