it was a brass flange bolt for plumbing that I found at park supply. it was almost the perfect size - I just had to grind down the threads with one of those stone grinder drill attachments (the bit cost only 4 bucks).Scodiddly wrote:Very cool - how'd you make the bottom plate for the XLR?
it was so much nicer than using a step drill on an end cap.

Some handicapped person is going to fall down and break a hip, and it's going to be ALL YOUR FAULT.pixeltarian wrote:it's one of those industrial bathroom rails for the handicapped.substitute wrote:Very nice job! I gotta get back on that ball, What did you use for the body?

Hey, it looks really cool. Even if the top face is cut crooked. Someday I'll get around to making one, hopefully.
But hey, if you capture it with this mic, it'll really layer into a great snare sound... http://messageboard.tapeop.com/viewtopic.php?t=60547ubertar wrote:Some handicapped person is going to fall down and break a hip, and it's going to be ALL YOUR FAULT.pixeltarian wrote:it's one of those industrial bathroom rails for the handicapped.substitute wrote:Very nice job! That's a side benefit of DIY for Audio... Nobody cares what the mic looks like when they're listening to the recording!Hey, it looks really cool. Even if the top face is cut crooked.
Alternately, you can just Photoshop the images to make it sound better, right?

well... it depends on how dedicated you are. and you need a lot of patience. but if you have those things it's not too bad. just expect to get frustrated from time to time. The first thing I'm learning about DIY is that it takes patience and I have a lot less of it than I thought I had before DIY projects. I think the long road is always best (as in, don't get frustrated and half ass a step that you can't quite get down). and you'll need access to a dremel or roto-zip. and you'll need a step drill bit if you can't find a brass flange bolt that will fit an xlr. I used a flanged bolt and a stone grinding bit to fit the xlr connector in, and it worked pretty nice.j_howell wrote:Awesome. Difficulty-wise, how would you rate building it? I totally can't afford a second RCA, but would looooove to have another ribbon...and I do enjoy building stuffs...
also, make super sure you allow the epoxy/glue to dry for a full day. I couldn't for the life of me get the stuff I got to cure. and after it's all dry be sure to only handle it with your hands, I used a pliers to try and align it better inside the hosing and I broke it (for the 5th time). Now I doubt you'll have that much trouble. I used the wrong kind of epoxy and non toxic model glue (which perhaps is less strong). I noticed the only thing that was good and reliable (for me) was J.B. Weld. It's black and ugly but it does the job.
To sum it up, look at it as a hobby that will take you a while, set up work days and goals for what you want to accomplish. I'd also recommend a rubber mallet for pounding the wire mesh into shape around the dowel. I say go for it, and if you run into any problems, just shoot up a question and I'm sure Mr. Rickshaw or myself will give you some help.
P.S. I *might* be ordering some premade trusses and make them available, I'll post a notification if I do. This will make the build waaaaaaaaaaay easier because that's the hardest part to do.
