How long does everyone keep the boxes your gear came in?
Cleaning out my storage shed, and thinking about recycling the boxes my JBL monitors came in. Bought over 10 years ago. Waaaaay past warranty. And they take up a bunch of space.
I tend to keep boxes for things that cost more than a little money, in case I ever sell it or I move or something. But I dont think I'm selling these and dont plan on moving ever again if possible.
Like, boxes for my UA LA-610, and the Compex Compressor? Those I should probably keep..
but the boxes for an API 500 rack? Furman rack thingies? Behringer Synth? Do I really need them
I'm just hesitant to do it in case tomorrow I all of a sudden have a need I'm not thinking of.
I also need space. So theres that
Thoughts?

Gear comes in boxes?!? 99% of my stuff was bought used. Boxes are always long gone by the time I get my hands on anything.

Until my girlfriend gets sick of seeing them everywhere and throws them out while I'm at work.

Guilty.
I have a corner in the basement of boxes.
I’ve cleared out some as I’ve gotten sick of them, but it’s getting out of hand.
Problem is I usually keep all the stickers/manual/warranty/extra plug bullshit in the box too, so I’d have to go through that too... For big things like keyboards it’s kind of nice to have the shipping box too, “just in case.” (This guy hardly ever sells anything online)

Speaking as the repair manager for a pro audio dealer, you really don't need to save specific boxes. Definitely try to keep boxes that will fit your gear and protect it during shipping, though.

too long. I hold on to them for the move I've been expecting to make for the last nine years.

Ok. Thanks all for the reassurance that I am a) not the only one, and b) not being irresponsible by getting rid of some.

I finally consolidated and moved all my manuals and warranty shit to one little storage bin a few months ago. I don't think I'll ever use any of them, but seeing them in one accessible place gives me a small sense of organizational satisfaction.

If I bought it new, I have the box. I'm lucky that there is an attic above my control room, so there's plenty of space for them.

I've still got the box my H3000 came in, circa 1995. To this day, it's still one of the most expensive single pieces I've purchased.
Lotta other gear has flowed through with no particular box retention...

I usually keep them at lest through the end of the warranty period (assuming it was new). After that it just depends on my mood.

I usually keep one or two boxes for single space rack size stuff, in case I sell something or need it repaired.
Otherwise, one year for new stuff, then it gets recycled.
Cheers!

Howling at the neighbors. Hoping they have more mic cables.

Re: How long does everyone keep the boxes your gear came in?
I keep the boxes for things that I shlepp often and/or leave in storage predominately. I've got two mixers in cardboard boxes and original styrofoam. One's a Bose Xtramixer I bought used in the 80's. I gigged with it like that as a teenager, boxing and unboxing it each time. And I'm doing it again with a newer little mixer too. The box has a built in handle and snug, but cut right styrofoam? But aside from that I try to break 'em down and recycle them. Does anyone store boxes flat?
