Re: Overdrive pedals educate me
Btw, was 1970 when I first plugged in ..and from that day on never had a pedal on the floor.

I actually put mine in front of the amp while reamping some M-Tron "String" parts.Recycled_Brains wrote: ↑Fri Oct 16, 2020 10:35 amI've been using the KWB on synth a lot lately. Rules.
It was certainly a sound you would not forget that you had heard.

BK Butler Tube Driver (incorrectly called a "Blue Tube" in another thread) has been great for me for the past 20 years or so.

We had one of those at my old place. I forgot about them.Snarl 12/8 wrote: ↑Sat Oct 17, 2020 5:16 pmBK Butler Tube Driver (incorrectly called a "Blue Tube" in another thread) has been great for me for the past 20 years or so.

I got my Soul Food pedal on Friday and used it on a session Saturday. I got a really nice driven, present sound with a Tele and the AC15.

Please pardon my ignorance, but what is PRF?

Nothing to pardon, the acronym smacks of insider pretentiousness.
The PRF is the (somewhat) ironically titled 'Premiere Rock Forum', the message board over at Steve Albini's place. It's temporarily down.
It tends to be a little funnier, but sometimes a little more highfalutin than this island of good will. Their tech room is heavier on guitar/bass/amp discussions, but some good recording tech talk from time to time. Their main page has long debates about everything from Scotch whiskey, to comedic pornography film titles, to which Jesus Lizard album is the most essential.
There are some really cool/smart people over there and of course a few blowhards.

1. This thread rules.
2. Just built one of these https://buildyourownclone.com/products/silver-pony-2 for that Klon sound. So far it's great!

Idiotbox Effects has a Klon pedal called the Han-Taun and I bet it rules. I haven't used it, but I have used his Blower Box and the Ron Swanson (lol) fuzz and they are SO good and very affordable. One man operation too, so you can feel good supporting a small business.jmann wrote: ↑Sun Nov 01, 2020 6:51 pm1. This thread rules.

I think BYOC is pretty hit or miss myself. I've built a few and most are just collecting dust because I have similar things that just sound better to me. The germanium ESV fuzz is great though.

Whatever you do, you'll need to mic it with a 57.
Since you've got some great amps at your disposal already, I'd go with an Xotic EP booster. It adds a touch of sparkle and compression and drives the front end of an amp really nicely. $75 used, give or take, and it's the only pedal on my board that's always on.

You joker! I did get a Soul Food, but I'll look at the Xotic.mjau wrote: ↑Mon Nov 02, 2020 11:00 amWhatever you do, you'll need to mic it with a 57.

The Bass Soul Food is excellent, and is on my main bass board.
The reg'lar Soul Food has been on my main guitar board, but I find it a touch dark.
(My main boost/OD is a Toadworks Meat, Jr., as I think I posted above.)

I had Soul Food for a while, but in my setup the mids seemed a little honky and it lost its charm.
So now in its place is a Barber Gain Changer, which is great for overdrive and crunch. It’s my basic always-on if I don’t want Fender cleans (mostly from a Fender Showman combo with a Weber 15”). For the rest of the disto spectrum I’m using a Keeley Red Dirt Germanium which can go from all flavors of drive into bordering on fuzz. It’s a Tube Screamerish thing.
Which is a sound I like. Another option here is Earthquaker Plumes, super versatile range of tones.
And just for the hell of it I picked up a Rat clone in a tiny mini enclosure for $25 or something, made by “Myomorpha” I believe.
Those are the main ones. Jeez, plus a Barber Dirty Bomb, beautiful high-gain tones. A Catalinbred Antichthon, which is insane weird and difficult. A fuzz or two.
Fun topic. And endless.

I got an amazing sound out of this when I demo'd it, so I bought it immediately. Since then I've not been able to get anything useful out of it. Help me?

I've got a Bass Muff that works well.
I wanted something that was good with my Vox, so a little dark from the Soul Food isn't a problem.
